The dubious value of Virtue Signalling

by Lazarus on Friday, June 9, 2017 5:27 AM
After years of watching conservatives mocking progressive types for virtue signalling, it was a bizarre feeling to watch these same conservatives explain how the Andrew Scheer whipped caucus voted to support the Liberal’s motion of support for the Paris Accord was necessary and politically astute.

The argument they used is this; yes, the Paris Accord targets are voluntary, the targets unattainable and even if they were reached, would do little to effect any climate change. So by voting in support of the Accord, it sends a signal that the Conservative Party of Canada is a kinder, gentler and more environmentally friendly party. This in turn will render the party safe from criticism by progressive environmental groups, the media and the governing Liberals.

This sounds good until you look at what else is said. The same new adherents to virtue signalling also assure others that the CPC opposes any Carbon Tax that would monetize carbon emissions. This is a good thing in itself, but...
