The Rational Anarchist is the rebirth of the original Rational Anarchist website that began in the early 90s as an internet presence of the Fido-Net BBS "The Rational Anarchist", a website that was developed some years earlier and was founded on the basis of the theory of Rational Anarchism as laid out by the character Professor Bernardo de la Paz in Robert Heinlein's novel "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" That website grew into a network of BBS's across the USA and Canada and into Europe with 5 BBS's located in Denmark and Germany. The website grew until it was highly ranked in Google, and contained a link where files could be requested from the BBS which contained 250MB of zipped text files on liberty, anarcho-capitalism, and libertarianism.
Rational Anarchism was defined as "The Rational Anarchist believes that concepts such as state, society, and government have no existence, save as physically exemplified in the acts of self-responsible individuals. He believes that it is impossible to shift blame, share blame or to distribute blame, as blame, guilt and responsibility are matters taking place inside of human beings and nowhere else. Yet being rational, he knows that not all individuals hold his evaluations, so he tries to live perfectly in an imperfect world aware that his effort will be less than perfect, yet undismayed by self-knowledge of self-failure.
He will accept any rules, that society deems, necessary for its freedom. He is free no matter what rules surround him, for if he finds the rules tolerable, he will tolerate them. If he finds them obnoxious he breaks them. He is free because he knows that he alone is morally responsible for everything he does."
As I pointed out way back then, both the socialist left and the fascist right both fear the individualist. "Fascism and Socialism both fear the intelligent individualist because he can see their philosophies for what they are, a spurious belief that the state is far more important than the individual and that people should be treated as units rather than separate entities. The Fascist is more openly totalitarian and easier for the average person to dislike. No one likes the jackboot kicking in the door, particularly those on the other side of the door. However repulsive Fascism is, at least the fascist is honest about his intentions. The Fascist openly admits that his goal is to dominate and control society and to dispose of those he dislikes. The same cannot be said of the Socialist who is equally intolerant of opposing views but conceals his ambitions with high sounding claims such as "for the good of all" and "equality" and "freedom." He neglects to mention that the "all" means only those who agree and support him."
From an old FAQ I wrote in 1991:
If Rational Anarchism means individual freedom, how does it differ from Libertarianism?
Libertarianism is a political belief and acts within society to effect change in society. The Rational Anarchist does not care if society changes to fit his needs. He seeks only to free himself and to live within his own value system. Rational Anarchists and Libertarians are very compatible because they both seek very similar goals, one seeks it on a societal level and the other seeks it on an individual basis.
